Phenoxyethanol (2-Phenoxyethanol, CAS 122-99-6) is an organic compound with the molecular formula of C8H10O2, which can be synthesized by etherification of ethylene glycol and phenol.
Phenoxyethanol is a colorless, slightly viscous liquid with aromatic smell, slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in ethanol and sodium hydroxide.
Phenoxyethanol has antibacterial effect (generally used together with quaternary ammonium salt), and is often used as a substitute for highly toxic sodium azide in biological buffer solution, because the toxicity of phenoxyethanol is low and it is not active to copper and lead chemically. In cosmetics, skin care products, vaccines and drugs, they usually play the role of preservatives.
